Losing weight can be a challenge, but it is easier to change your eating and exercise habits with the right motivation. If you focus on why you want to lose weight, you can give yourself the motivation to do the hard steps of making the changes in your daily routine that will enable you to lose weight. Following are four ways to help you get motivated to lose your excess weight.

Take the Body Photo

You’ll hate doing it and you’ll hate seeing it, but stand in front of a mirror in your underwear or tight fitting clothing and take a selfie. No one has to see it but you. Without clothes on, you can see every fold of skin and where your excess weight is sitting on your body. Taking a good look at yourself, without clothes to hide the weight with the fall of the fabric or the pattern of the clothes drawing your eyes away from your body, can really help you to see yourself as you are.

The body photo is something you can refer to when you want to eat something you shouldn’t or feel too lazy to exercise to give yourself the motivation to keep trying to lose weight. It can also provide a great way of measuring your achievement once you have lost the weight by doing a comparison photo.

Think About Your Children

Do you want to be play with your kids? Do you get breathless if you start to play in the back yard with them? Are you sick of sitting on the sidelines while they play with your spouse? Do you want to risk dying young, or would you rather see your children, your grandchildren, and possibly even great-grandchildren grow up? For your own health, so you can live long enough to enjoy time not only with your children but also their children, and for the ability to enjoy playing actively with your kids now, start to lose weight. Keep a photo of your kids handy – in your wallet or on the fridge – as a gentle reminder of why you want to lose weight.

Don’t Wait for the Health Scare

Spending time in hospital with doctors prodding at you is definitely not fun. Being obese or overweight significantly increases your health risks in a variety of areas, especially for diabetes or heart problems. Don’t wait for your own health scare to get you motivated. Simply look at some of the statistics of overweight people and serious illnesses or health conditions and take action to avoid it becoming true for you.

Try the Carry Test

If you decide you want to lose ten kilos or five pounds to be healthier, try putting that weight of something in a bag and then carry it around all day, everywhere you go. If you want to lose more weight, don’t try to lift too much weight, so keep it to the lower amount. You’ll be very tired and sore by the end of the day. This is what you actually are carrying around every day anyway – those extra kilos or pounds of weight that you don’t want. After the carry test, you’ll be more motivated to lose those kilos or pounds. Imagine how energetic you will feel when you no longer have to carry that extra weight.

Whatever your reasons for wanting to lose weight, whether it is for your own health, to spend time with your children and grandchildren, or simply to look better in your favourite clothes, taking photos or creating visual reminders of your reasons can help you to get and stay motivated on your weight loss journey. It does take time and effort to lose weight, but you can do it with the right motivation.
